Maya is on the Students' Union executive team and one of the issues that keeps coming up is the support for students with disabilities. She wants to help make a difference, but she also realises that there might be a better way of framing this issue, by thinking about the varying individual needs of all students and that, perhaps, technology can be used in a way to provide support and inclusion. She heard about the idea of 'universal design' and is quite taken by it. At a university committee meeting (where she is representing the student body) she hears Agnetha talk about her intention to work with her academic staff to explore how her department can more effectively use technologies. Maya sees this as a potential opportunity to raise her ideas and after the meeting speaks with Agnetha.

Agnetha thinks that this is a really useful perspective and agrees that it should form part of the overall technology review. She asks Maya if she wouldn't mind contributing some specific practical suggestions and also if she could review any of the plans or materials that might emerge from the department's reflections. Maya is happy to help but she points out that what she knows about digital technologies has really been through experience and largely self-taught. She wished that there could have been more opportunity to learn in her courses.
