Exceeding Storage Limit
This page provides information on how to avoid meeting the storage limit for an individual course on Canvas.
Just as in Blackboard, we recommend adding videos to Canvas Studio instead of uploading them directly to avoid using up excess storage capacity.
In the Canvas course that has exceeded its storage, navigate to 'files'. Then, click 'size' to sort your files from largest to smallest.
Most commonly, courses that have met the storage limit will have .mp4 or other video files added directly to the course. By downloading these, adding them to Studio (or Kaltura), and adding them back in to the course, they will not take up any storage.
Once you have saved the videos in Studio or Kaltura, be sure to delete the files directly from the 'files' area in Canvas to free up storage - removing them from a page or from the 'modules' area is not sufficient, as the file will remain in the course until removed directly from this 'files' area.
To access, Studio, click the icon (second from bottom) on the Global Navigation menu at far left. If the videos are saved to your computer, you can simply drag and drop them in, or click 'Add Video' and find them in your files that way. See also this guidance from Canvas on 'How do I upload media files to my Canvas Studio account?' Links to an external site.
You can then choose to show just the video to students, or to add Annotations or add question to make it a Video Quiz.
The video below from Canvas introduces Studio and how to add content.
To add one stand-alone video to a course's module area:
- Click the + sign at the relevant module
- Choose 'external tools' from the dropdown menu
- Scroll until you see 'Studio'
- Select the video
To add a video to a page (with other content, including text, pdfs, images or other videos)
- Click 'edit' on the page or create a new page (you can do this by clicking the + sign on the relevent module, then choose 'Pages' from the dropdown menu and click 'Create Page')
- Click the Studio icon on the text editor (it is blue and in-between the blue OneDrive cloud and the black plugin icon).
- Choose 'Studio'
- Select the video
- Repeat steps 2-4 to add additional videos on the page.
