This page provides information on methods of 'rollover' from one Canvas course to the new blank courses for the upcoming academic term.

Rollover methods and preferences will vary from individual to individual according to their needs - there are different styles of course copying that will suit different lecturers. The typical workflow might include:

A bulk course copy, with some editing and tidying to take place in the new course
A bulk course copy, with extensive editing and tidying to take place in the new course
Copying only the files, and rebuilding or redesigning content using pages and OneDrive embeds of PowerPoints or other files that you might change periodically.

Copying content from one year to another

When copying a course, whether in bulk or just one element, go the empty new course and begin there. Click on 'import content' from the home page.

Select 'copy a Canvas course' (the first option) from the dropdown menu. Choose 'select specific content' before you click the import button.

You will immediately see a line appear below with a blue button inviting you to select the content. Even when copying in bulk, we do not recommend copying everything, which would include settings, old announcements, and an untidy assignments area that will include empty assignments that reflect columns from your Blackboard grade centre. We recommend including the options as pictured below. If you intend to only copy files, then tick only the 'files' option.

WHAT NOT TO COPY OVER

We recommend NOT copying TURNITIN assignments and making them fresh in the new course. Turnitin Assignments are not designed to be copied, but Canvas assignments (made using the blue + Assignment button can be copied over from module to module).

You may make your own choice regarding course settings and syllabus body. If you have preferences regarding settings (e.g. the navigation menu, permissions on discussion boards) that you have set deliberately, you may include the settings. Similarly, if you have created a syllabus body deliberately, you may copy that over as well.
